Building the Site
Updated: May 10
To get things rolling we did mountains of research on erotica, publishing, the kindle, Amazon, and other ebook markets. We learned everything we could before putting the work into launching the business. And now that I write it out that way, it seems like a lot of work to do before we decide if we should start working. It was a good thing though, we are going into this thing with clear heads and we know what we need to do. It's not a guarantee of success, but it sure helps. Fortune favors the prepared.
We had some knowledge about WordPress from our own author sites, but making a really good looking site in WP is just more hassle than it's worth these days unless you are an expert. We looked at Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, and a few others. They all make nice looking sites and have most of the features we need, Wix was the best bet for our needs and our budget. A few days after we created our Wix account and we have a nice looking site that is almost done. There is no way we could have done this as quickly or easily in Wordpress, though it would have been free.
We are starting this thing on a shoestring budget. It won't die for lack of money, we can always dump a few more dollars in, but we also can't afford to pay web designers, copywriters, Amazon experts, and graphic designers. The business won't make a ton of money at first. In fact, since our goal is to help authors, and sell some of our own stuff, the company may never make much money. And that's fine with us. It just means that we have to keep expenses low.
Keeping expenses low means learning how to do everything ourselves. So we had crash courses in things like cover design, keyword research, blurb writing, contract writing, and of course using the Wix site builder. We already have a few books ready to go, and there are more on the immediate horizon. Our first goal is to get to the infamous "dirty thirty" in a few categories. Common lore among writers of erotica tells of a golden rainbow that can be found once an author reaches thirty erotic stories for sale on Amazon. We've heard that some authors have even advanced to Scribe status after reaching level 30, meaning they can quit their day jobs and write for a living.
If you are an aspiring author, we want to read your stories. Our revenue share is the best in the business. In fact, it's so good that we are already calling ourselves a disruptive business model. No one has ever done anything quite like what we are doing. If it doesn't go down in flames, it will go off like a rocket. Authors helping authors, and working with people who know how to sell books, should help us get to the "dirty thirty" quickly and then your book can sell as well as it would if you had twenty-nine other titles backing it up.
That is our ultimate goal. To take stories from authors who don't know how to sell them, and help them make money. We have well-known authors who just don't want to write erotica under their real names, and unknowns who have a few great stories but don't know how to sell them. We also have up and coming authors looking for a break or some extra coffee money. If any of these descriptions fit you, get in touch. Help us build this thing and we'll help you build a writing career. Thank you for reading, The Team at Chained Hearts Publishing
